Abyssus Areas & Map

Every combat zone, depth layout, enemy types, and hidden objectives across the four expedition areas.

An Abyssus expedition sends your Brinehunter team through four distinct underwater ruins, each with its own visual identity, enemy roster, and environmental hazards. Understanding how areas connect, how many depths each zone contains, and what to expect at every depth tier is the foundation for planning Blessing picks, charm priorities, and boss strategies. This guide maps every combat area from your first dive in the Abandoned Temple to the climactic Royal Abyss confrontation.

Expedition Area Overview

Areas are not freely chosen — you progress linearly through Temple, Gardens, Sanctuary, and Royal Abyss during a single run. Within each area you descend through numbered depths, clearing combat rooms, visiting merchants, and interacting with Blessing Altars before reaching the depth portal that takes you deeper or into the next zone. Three areas contain four depths each; Royal Abyss compresses the finale into two depths for a faster, harder conclusion. For the full room-to-room flow including merchants and portals, read our expedition flow guide.

Area Depths Key Features
Abandoned Temple 4 Intro zone, crumbling stone corridors, basic enemy types
Gardens 4 Open bioluminescent flora, plant-based enemies, wider arenas
Sanctuary 4 Sacred architecture, central pillar, Brine Field unlock
Royal Abyss 2 Final zone, Royal Heralds elites, secret Fish Deity boss

Abandoned Temple

The Abandoned Temple is where every Brinehunter learns the ropes. Its four depths feature relatively narrow corridors and modest enemy counts compared to later zones, making it ideal for testing weapon mods, practicing dash timing, and experimenting with early Blessing combinations. Depth 1 rooms introduce standard corrupted guardians and ranged attackers; by depth 2 you face your first elite encounter with higher health pools and additional spawn waves.

Depth 3 often mixes melee rushers with projectile enemies, punishing players who stay grounded too long. Use your double jump and directional dash liberally here to build muscle memory for the rest of the run. Depth 4 is the Temple boss room — a large arena where the area guardian tests your sustained damage and movement. Clearing it unlocks the portal to the Gardens. Chests in Temple depths frequently drop common and uncommon Charms, so prioritize breaking destructible objects and checking side alcoves before moving to the next depth.

Gardens

The Gardens shift the expedition into brighter, more open bioluminescent spaces filled with coral structures and aggressive plant-themed enemies. All four depths maintain the standard elite-at-depth-2 and boss-at-depth-4 structure, but room layouts tend to be wider, encouraging long-range weapons like the Combat Bow and Engine Rifle. Vine and spore enemies apply area denial, so mobility abilities and the Turret ability help control space while you reposition.

Environmental hazards in the Gardens include poison patches and erupting flora that can surprise players rushing between cover. Depth 3 merchant visits become especially valuable here — stock up on healing syringes before the depth 4 boss, which often summons adds that overwhelm unprepared teams. Co-op groups can split responsibilities: one player clears adds while others focus boss weak points. Solo players should lean on crowd control Blessings from the Frost or Lightning Aspects to survive add phases.

Sanctuary

Sanctuary is the most lore-rich zone in the expedition, featuring towering sacred architecture and the iconic central pillar that holds a critical hidden reward. Like Temple and Gardens, Sanctuary spans four depths with escalating enemy difficulty and a boss gate at depth 4. The central pillar on depth 1 (and accessible on later revisits) contains the Brine Field ability — a protective brine bubble that shields allies inside its radius. Finding and unlocking Brine Field is one of the most important progression milestones for both solo and co-op runs.

Sanctuary enemies tend to be more aggressive and better coordinated than earlier zones, with shielded units and teleporting attackers that punish static positioning. The depth 2 elite fight here is a common run-ending point for newer players, so invest in damage upgrades from the Soul Wheel before pushing high Brine levels. Hidden Surge Fissures occasionally appear in Sanctuary rooms — activating them triggers bonus combat with extra Soul Fragment rewards. After clearing the Sanctuary boss at depth 4, you enter Royal Abyss for the final two depths.

Royal Abyss

Royal Abyss is the expedition finale with only two depths, but both are significantly harder than anything in the preceding areas. Depth 1 introduces Royal Abyss guardians and sets the tone for the endgame enemy scaling tied to your Deep Water Level. Depth 2 houses the three Royal Heralds — elite mini-bosses that must be defeated to progress toward the secret Fish Deity encounter. Consult our detailed boss guide for Herald mechanics, attack patterns, and team positioning tips.

Royal Abyss rooms are smaller and more claustrophobic than Gardens arenas, favoring close-range weapons and the Anchor ability for players who prefer melee brawler builds. Defeating all three Heralds unlocks access to the hidden Fish Deity boss and the legendary Fish Deity weapon. Because Royal Abyss has fewer depths, every room matters — missing a merchant visit or Blessing Altar earlier in the run hurts more here. Plan your resource economy during Temple, Gardens, and Sanctuary so you arrive at Royal Abyss with full healing supplies and a cohesive build.

Area Progression Tips

  • Clear every depth fully before using the depth portal — missed chests and altars do not return.
  • Visit merchants at depth 2 and depth 3 in each area when routes allow; healing stock is critical for bosses.
  • Unlock Brine Field in Sanctuary as early as possible — it remains useful through Royal Abyss.
  • Study enemy types per area to pre-select Aspect Blessings that counter dominant threats.
  • At high Brine levels, boss variations add modifiers — prepare alternate strategies before depth 4 fights.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many areas are in an Abyssus expedition?
A full expedition visits four combat areas in order: Abandoned Temple, Gardens, Sanctuary, and Royal Abyss. You progress through each via depth portals until you clear the final Royal Abyss encounter.
How many depths does each area have?
Abandoned Temple, Gardens, and Sanctuary each contain four depths. Royal Abyss is shorter with only two depths, making it a concentrated finale rather than a full four-depth zone.
Where is the Brine Field ability found?
Brine Field is hidden in the Sanctuary area on the central pillar. You must reach Sanctuary depth 1 or higher and interact with the pillar to unlock it. See our Brine Field guide for step-by-step directions.
What happens at depth 2 and depth 4 in each area?
Depth 2 typically features an elite fight with tougher enemies and better loot drops. Depth 4 is the area boss room — clearing it opens the portal to the next area or advances you toward the Royal Abyss finale.
