How to Get the Plasma Launcher in Abyssus
Complete The Blazing Weapon challenge and unlock the most powerful AoE weapon in Abyssus.
The Plasma Launcher is Abyssus's premier area-of-effect weapon, firing plasma bolts that explode on impact and clearing entire rooms in seconds when properly built. Unlike the default Engine Rifle, Plasma Launcher unlocks through a specific lobby challenge called The Blazing Weapon. This guide explains challenge requirements, optimal strategies for completion, and how to build around Plasma Launcher once unlocked.
Challenge Overview
The Blazing Weapon challenge appears on the lobby challenge board near the expedition launch area. Interact with the challenge board to view requirements and track progress. The challenge tasks you with inflicting burn or fire damage across multiple expeditions — typically requiring a cumulative burn damage threshold and a specific number of enemy kills while burning.
Challenge progress accumulates across expeditions. You do not need to complete all requirements in a single run. Run multiple expeditions with fire-damage builds, track progress on the challenge board, and the Plasma Launcher unlocks permanently once all thresholds are met.
Challenge Requirements
The Blazing Weapon challenge typically requires three categories of progress: total burn damage inflicted across all expeditions, number of enemies killed while burning, and a minimum expedition completion count. Exact numbers display on the challenge board — check your lobby challenge panel for current thresholds and remaining progress.
Burn damage comes from Flares Aspect Blessings, incendiary weapon mods, and environmental fire hazards. The fastest progress path stacks Flares Aspect on primary fire during every expedition, regardless of your preferred weapon. Engine Rifle with Flares Aspect generates burn damage consistently across all four areas.
Optimal Challenge Strategy
Build for Burn Damage
Assign Flares Aspect to primary fire at the first Blessing Altar in each expedition. Stack Flares Blessings whenever altars offer them — each Flares Blessing increases Status Effectiveness, making burns longer and more lethal. Stacking Flames (Minor Blessing at 3rd slot) lets burn damage stack on enemies for escalating damage totals that accelerate challenge progress.
Expedition Selection
Run expeditions at Brine 3-6 for optimal enemy density without excessive difficulty. Abandoned Temple and Gardens feature clustered enemy spawns where burns spread between targets via Linked Flames (Major Blessing at 6th slot). Complete full expeditions rather than abandoning early — challenge progress tracks per expedition completion.
Weapon and Mod Choices
Engine Rifle is the safest challenge-completion weapon — reliable automatic fire applies burn consistently. Shotgun incendiary secondary fire modes add burst burn damage. Any weapon with Flares Aspect works; prioritize consistency over peak damage. Avoid Brine Revolver for challenge runs — single-target precision does not generate burn damage volume efficiently.
Tracking Progress
Return to the lobby after each expedition and check the challenge board. Progress bars update immediately upon expedition completion. Most players complete The Blazing Weapon within five to eight expeditions with dedicated Flares builds. Soul Wheel Enhanced Weapons upgrade accelerates kill counts by reducing time per room.
Unlocking Plasma Launcher
When all challenge thresholds are met, the challenge board displays a completion notification and Plasma Launcher appears in your lobby weapon selection. The unlock is permanent and account-bound. Select Plasma Launcher before launching any future expedition — it replaces your current weapon selection for that dive.
Plasma Launcher features three primary fire modes (standard plasma bolts, charged plasma orbs, rapid-fire streams) and three secondary modes (explosive grenades, piercing bolts, cluster plasma) unlocked through subsequent weapon challenges. Base Plasma Launcher is immediately viable with Flares Aspect — mod and secondary mode unlocks come later through standard progression.
Building Around Plasma Launcher
The Plasma explosion build is the definitive Plasma Launcher loadout. Equip Ms. Boom Charm to double explosion damage and Fan Charm for extra plasma bolts per shot. Stack Flares on primary fire for Linked Flames Major Blessing, Chain Lightning on secondary for arc follow-up, and Tentacles on ability for enemy grouping into blast radius.
Forge Mods that increase AoE radius or projectile count multiply Plasma Launcher effectiveness. Apply mods at the Ancient Forge between depths. Ascended Blessings Soul Wheel upgrade enables golden Flares Blessing upgrades that double explosion-triggered Flare damage — the single largest damage spike for this build.
Plasma Launcher struggles against isolated Herald mini-bosses where explosion splash cannot hit multiple targets. Bring Brine Revolver secondary fire or switch weapons for Royal Abyss Herald gauntlets. See Royal Abyss guide for Herald-specific weapon recommendations.
Plasma Launcher vs Other Top Weapons
Compare Plasma Launcher against Tesla Gun and Combat Bow on the tier list. Plasma Launcher wins room clear speed. Tesla Gun wins sustained crowd control with less build investment. Brine Revolver wins single-target boss damage. Most advanced players unlock all three and select per expedition based on area composition and team role.
